Yamaha Waverunner Speed Limiter Removal
On a Yamaha Waverunner, you can:
- Check for a short in the wire harness to unlock the speed limiter.
- Remove the seat to test whether the key fob under the dash, near the receiver, would open the ski.
- Send your ECU in for a reflash to remove the factory speed limiter and gain 3–4 mph without further modifications.
How To Remove/Adjust Speed Limits On A Yamaha Motorcycle?
Locate the Rev and Speed Limits Folder by opening the music in C3. The value in MPH where the speed limiter is currently set is displayed when you click Top Vehicle Speed Limit.
The speed restriction table from a Yamaha MT-09 is shown in the image below for reference; it has a factory limit of 130.49 MPH (MPH is given by default); you can click on this number and change the MPH value as needed. To eliminate the speed limiter effectively, change the number to a value the bike will never reach. This will make the limiter ineffective.
Some automobiles impose additional top speed restrictions outside the tune’s Top Vehicle Speed Limit table. Occasionally, throttle limits in the upper gears on drive-by-wire (DBW) vehicles will limit your top speed.
This is true of the FZ/MT-09 stock file presented as an example in this article. Click on Drive By Wire and then the power Mode you want to adjust to view and modify the DBW tables. Then, each gear will have a different throttle map under each Mode folder.
The bike used in this example has six gears. However, the STK tune displays 13 gear tables; typically, the tables for seven through thirteen are not used. Some bikes will have more tables than the bike has gears.
By selecting the Gear Map Index, you can view the currently used tables. The image below demonstrates how this machine asks for gear mappings 00 (neutral), 01 (used for first through third gear), and 04 and 06, respectively.
If you wanted to alter any of these parameters, you could click on the corresponding number and type that number in the bottom row to give that gear an alternative gear map profile. The DBW tables show restrictions for some gears on this bike after a particular RPM/twist grip position.
In this specific stock file, you can see that the bike is not truly asking for 100% throttle at the throttle body, even when the twist grip is set to 100% wide open throttle (WOT) in the top 2 gears.
The gear map for the fifth gear in Mode A (performance mode) is an example in the table below. The RPM is displayed vertically, and the twist grip position is displayed along the horizontal axis.
The highlighted cell in the graphic below, for instance, demonstrates how, at 100% wide open throttle (WOT) at the twist grip and 7,500 RPM, the actual requested throttle is only 74.14% rather than 100%, preventing you from getting the full amount of power the bike can produce at WOT in high gear.
You can adjust these values by selecting a group of cells to be highlighted. Enter the appropriate value from the horizontal axis into the boxes for each RPM if you want the twist grip to match the specified throttle.
You can copy and paste the values in this table to other gear map tables, such as the fourth or sixth, if you like the modifications you made to this particular gear map (in this case, gear map 05), or you can return to your Gear Map Index and set the fourth, fifth, and sixth gears to use gear map 5 or whatever gears you want to apply this DBW profile to.
Remember that making big changes in the low RPM or low throttle zones can cause the bike to react suddenly; instead, start with small adjustments and build up to the ideal reaction.
The bottom end of these tables may typically be ignored, whereas locations at 75% throttle or higher will receive the most attention. Once done, please save the file to your Powervision device and flash the melody onto your car to test it.
