In this article I will explain how to put Tesla in neutral model y? Shifting a Tesla into Neutral is similar to shifting into Drive or Reverse, but you must do one more thing to ensure you don’t accidentally shift into Neutral.

Keep in mind that putting your car in neutral could make it roll backward.

In most cars, there is a gear called “neutral.” Neutral gear is meant to be used when the car is not moving, like when it is being pushed.

Reverse

Pull the Drive stick up all the way, then let go. When Model Y is stopped or going less than 5 mph (8 km/h), you can only shift into reverse.

Neutral Neutral lets Model Y move freely when the brake pedal is not pressed:

• When the car is in Park, move it into Neutral by pushing the drive stick briefly to the first position, either up or down.
• Shift from Drive to Neutral by briefly moving the drive stalk to the first position from Drive. If Autosteer or Traffic-Aware Cruise Control is on, you must move the drive stick to the first position and hold it there for more than 1 second. By doing this, you turn off Autosteer or Traffic-Aware Cruise Control.
• When in Reverse, briefly move the drive stick down to the first position to get into Neutral.
• When you leave the driver’s seat, the Model Y shifts into the Park. To stay Neutral, use the tablet to turn on Transport Mode (see How to Use a Transporter for more information).

How to Put Tesla in Transport Mode?

You can use the Transport Mode (Towing) if you want your Tesla to be Neutral while you leave the driver’s seat or if you need the neutral mode to be on for a long time.

Here’s how to turn on “Tow Mode” and put your Tesla in “neutral” so you can move it:

• To put the car in parking mode, press the button at the end of the gear stick.
• Step on the brake and hold it down.
• On the screen, tap Towing under Controls > Service. The screen will show a warning reminding you to tow your Tesla safely.
• Hold the Transport Mode button down for a long time until it goes blue.
• Your Tesla will shift into neutral, and it will now move forward on its own.

How to Put Tesla Model S/Model X in Neutral?

Putting a Tesla Model S or X made before 2021 in Neutral is the same as putting a Model 3 or Model Y in Neutral. But the 2021+ ones are different. I’ve written more about both of them below:

Model S and Model X (Pre 2021)

• Parked. Press and hold the pedal for the brakes. Then, push the gear stick up or down to move into neutral gear.
• “Drive.” To go from Drive to Neutral, gently push the gear stick halfway up. Hold it there for over a second when Autosteer or Cruise Control is on.
• Backwards. To go from Reverse to Neutral, push the drive stick down halfway for a moment.

Model S and Model X (2021+)

The 2021+ Model S and Model X have no real gear stick. Instead, you can use the touchscreen or the buttons on the center panel to switch between Park, Reverse, Neutral, and Drive.

To use the tablet to shift into Neutral, open Controls. Then, press and hold Neutral on the drive mode strip.

To put the car in neutral, using the physical PRND buttons on the center console, hit any buttons to turn on the center console buttons (the LEDs next to each button will light up).

Then, press the N button to turn on the Neutral mode. When the Neutral mode is enabled, the LED for Neutral will turn amber.

Tip: The new Model S and X don’t have a real drive stalk, so the drive mode switch is on the Center Console. When the screen isn’t working, the controls on the center console turn on immediately.
